Conventions Assignment

Please prepare the following to be ready for class discussion during the next meeting.

  • What is the definition of the word "convention"? How would this apply to computer interface conventions?

  • Before the next class period, sit down at a computer and make a list of as many interface conventions as you notice. You'll be surprised at the amount of "conventional" knowledge you have about how a graphical user interface works (or should work.) Pay attention to things like the following:

    • - using the mouse
    - finding things on the hard drive or in your document
    - opening documents
    - getting help
    - using menus
    - other...
